The Amelia Island Museum of History will host Dr. Jonathan Bryant's presentation “Dark Places of the Earth: Voyages of the Slave Ship Antelope” for its August "3rd on 3rd" lecture on August 18, 2023 at 6 p.m.
In 1820, a suspicious vessel was spotted lingering off the coast of northern Florida -- the Spanish slave ship Antelope. The ship and its almost 300 African captives were seized by the United States, sparking an explosion of legal action that eventually made it all the way to the Supreme Court.
Dr. Jonathan Bryant will speak about the captives’ harrowing voyage across dangerous waters and the 8-year legal conflict that followed to determine their freedom.
Attendance is free for museum members and a suggested donation of $5 for nonmembers. Seating is limited on a first-come, first-served basis. This program is wheelchair accessible.
Every third Friday on Third Street, the Amelia Island Museum of History hosts historians, authors, and other experts for a thought-provoking lecture on local or regional history. These hour-long lectures range from Florida’s statehood to the history of toys; live oral histories to Yamasee princes.
