The Fernandina Observer values civic participation and provides space for our community to share opinions through our Letters to the Editor section. Letters are an important part of public dialogue, and we welcome a wide range of perspectives when they are expressed respectfully and signed by the author.
However, we will not allow online comments on Letters to the Editor or editorials.
This decision reflects several important considerations:
Accountability: Letters to the Editor are signed and verified. Comments, by contrast, can be anonymous and often lack accountability.
Civility: Sensitive political or social topics can quickly escalate in online comment threads, leading to personal attacks, misinformation, and division.
Consistency: By requiring responses in the form of signed letters, we ensure that all viewpoints meet the same standard of thoughtfulness and responsibility.
Readers who wish to respond to a published letter are encouraged to submit their own signed letter to the editor through this submission form. We will continue to publish a broad range of community voices, provided they adhere to our guidelines of civility and respect.
This approach maintains the Observer’s commitment to open dialogue while protecting our platform from the harm caused by unmoderated online exchanges.

Guidelines
The Fernandina Observer welcomes Letters to the Editor as a forum for community voices. We encourage thoughtful, respectful contributions on local issues, public policy, and matters of civic importance.
To ensure fairness and consistency, all letters must follow these guidelines:
Requirements
Length: Letters are limited to 600 words.
Author Information: Each letter must include the writer’s full name, city of residence, and a phone number for verification. Only the name and city will be published. Anonymous letters will not be accepted.
Original Work: Letters must be the original work of the author and not previously published elsewhere.
Frequency: To allow space for all voices, we generally limit writers to one letter every 30 days.
Standards
Letters must avoid personal attacks, hate speech, or vulgar language.
Criticism of public officials, candidates, or organizations is welcome when focused on actions, policies, or issues — not personal character.
We reserve the right to edit for clarity, grammar, and length, while preserving the writer’s intent.
We do not guarantee publication of every submission.
