Ken Ludwig’s 'Lend Me a Soprano' opening at ACT

Amelia Community Theatre (ACT) will present the comedy “Lend Me a Soprano” beginning Feb. 13. Based on Ken Ludwig’s “Lend Me a Tenor,” which ACT first produced in 2013, the current version features female performers.

The show is set in 1934 with the Cleveland Opera Company preparing to welcome one of the biggest stars in the opera world, Elena Firenzi, to perform in “Carmen” for a gala event. However, the world-class soprano Elena has a jealous husband and a reputation for needing a keeper to watch over her. Jo, the assistant to the manager of the opera house and a budding opera singer herself, is charged with keeping Elena away from men and liquor while she rests in her hotel suite before the performance. Everything that can go wrong does, putting the gala in jeopardy. However, the show must go on, and the characters in this screwball comedy find a way to save the day.

ACT’s cast of eight includes Amy Baker, Lisa Knapp, Steve Parrot, Anthony Rodriguez, Carlos Semidei, Regina Torres, Sue Weiner, and Terri Witkosky. Director Janet Hild says, “During the heart of the Great Depression, live musicians, like many others, suffered. People couldn’t afford tickets, the radio was bringing music into living rooms, and musicians were left out in the cold. It’s no wonder that the Cleveland Opera Company was desperate to showcase this opera star. But what happens when the star is indisposed? Come laugh with us as we cheer on the Cleveland Opera's all-around dogsbody as she saves the show.”
