Haiku for You

Posted

Amelia Island Writers present “Stretch Your Imagination with Haiku” on Tuesday, April 29, 3-5 p.m. at Story & Song Center for Arts & Culture. It’s open to the public, and writing experience is not necessary. All you have to do is show up to discover what it is and how to do it.

Haiku is a timeless poetic form, and liked by people who aren't necessarily poetry fans. Become familiar with the traditional form of haiku, based on nature and seasons. Perfect for Amelia Island and April, National Poetry Month.

Patrick Gordon, a pilot, and Paul Meehan, a shipmaster, are both skilled in haiku. They will share their work composed over international seas and skies. Also, artists Marcia DeFalco and Emily Gordon will present their haiku-inspired art.

The program will be moderated by AIW members and haiku writers Marla McDaniel and Michael Stokes. Materials will be provided. Drawings for prizes are included. Arrive at 3 to purchase a beverage, snack, and social time. Program starts at 3:30.

Patrick Gordon flew Gulfstreams and Falcons in the Middle East for royal families and the government. He was an aviation advisor to the United Arab Emirates. Patrick has managed super yachts in the Mediterranean and retired to Amelia Island, where he writes and provides VIP aviation and marine consulting. Visit his website for haiku and more.

Paul Meehan has long enjoyed writing haiku and has a great interest in Japanese culture. As a merchant mariner, his work took him around the world. While docked in Sasebo, Japan, he saw a notice of The Mainichi Daily News' annual haiku contest, entered, and he won! Paul looks forward to sharing tips about this art form.
