Fundraiser raises money for breast cancer

Five women from different walks of life have come together to raise awareness and money for Pinky Promise, a nonprofit that provides free wigs, scarves, mastectomy camisoles, gas cards and more for women battling cancer. Taking a lead from Kristine Ochu, former world log-rolling champion and popular motivational speaker, provided the group with the mantras: “Keep On Rolling,” “Never Give Up” and “Take One More Step.” The other women are Julie Ruppel, owner of Amelia Island Julz, a local jewelry designer who does custom metal stamping, Ashley Herrera and Jasmine Serrano, owners of Kismet Coffee, and Sybil Purvis, founder of Pinky Promise.

The five women have all been touched by breast cancer and by women who need encouragement to overcome a challenging illness. Ashley Herrera and Jasmine Serrano are the young owners of a new coffee shop on the Island, Kismet Coffee, located on the traffic circle near Harris Teeter. They immediately jumped in to offer their shop for the fundraising event. Together, they decided to support breast cancer and reached out to Sybil Purvis, the founder of Pinky Promise, based in Callahan. All will be at the November 23 fundraiser.

Ochu shared, “We are inviting people to stop by, grab a coffee, tea, or baked good, and purchase a bracelet for someone who may need a gift of courage, hope, and strength.”
