Kindness Matters

The power to change lives

Posted

Just before Christmas, a vigil was held in front of the city courthouse to remember and honor our unsheltered neighbors who lost their lives this past year. Four members of our community were honored at that vigil, and beautiful eulogies were given that commemorated their lives.

I was honored to be one of the speakers at that vigil. I know many of our homeless neighbors through Chandler's Hope, where we provide quality clothing for those in need throughout Nassau County and beyond.

I wanted to share the words I spoke that night. They come from my heart. Here is what I said:

Tonight, I want to talk about four things that have the power to change lives: love, kindness, humility, and giving to those less fortunate.

Love is not just something we feel; it’s something we do. Real love shows up when it’s inconvenient, when it costs us something, and when no one is watching. It’s found in listening without judgment, in standing beside someone who feels forgotten, and in choosing compassion over comfort. Love reminds people they matter, especially when the world has made them feel invisible.

Kindness is love in action. It doesn’t have to be grand or loud. Sometimes kindness looks like a warm meal, a coat on a cold day, or simply meeting someone’s eyes and acknowledging their humanity. A single act of kindness can restore hope in a moment of despair. We may never know the battles someone is fighting, but kindness has a way of speaking directly to the heart.

Humility keeps us grounded. It reminds us that none of us are above another. We are not here to save people; we are here to walk alongside them. Humility teaches us to serve without expecting recognition and to give without conditions. It allows us to see others not as problems to fix, but as people worthy of dignity, respect, and love.

And giving, true giving, is not about what we have left over. It’s about sharing what we’ve been blessed with, whether that’s time, resources, or compassion. When we give to those less fortunate, we are not just meeting physical needs; we are restoring hope and affirming worth. Giving reminds us that we are all connected, and that when one of us is struggling, it is our responsibility to care.

When love leads, kindness follows. When humility guides us, giving becomes natural. And when we choose to live this way, we create a ripple effect that reaches farther than we could ever imagine.

Let us be a people who love boldly, act kindly, walk humbly, and give generously, because in doing so, we don’t just change lives, we change the world.

Thank you so much, Michele, for your powerful message! In these especially crazy times, love and kindness and humility and giving are needed so much. Love and kindness are not like pie, able to be used up; instead they build on themselves, where the more love and kindness we show and act upon, the more it grows.
