Many do not know that Mayport has two lighthouses — the St. Johns River Lighthouse, active from 1859 to 1930, and the St. Johns Light, built in 1954. The older lighthouse still stands on Naval Station Mayport, locked behind a fence, deteriorating.
The Amelia Island Museum of History will present a program on Friday, July 18, about a project to relocate the historic St. Johns River Lighthouse to public riverfront property in Jacksonville, where it can be restored and enjoyed by the community.
Dan Hogan is a Jacksonville native, University of Florida graduate, and president of the revived Mayport Lighthouse Association. A long-time advocate for lighthouse preservation, he is leading the charge to save this important piece of maritime history.
