Publix celebrates Earth Day in a week of service

Publix Super Markets CEO Kevin Murphy joined more than 45 employees on Earth Day Wednesday for a beach cleanup at Peters Point Beachfront Park, collecting roughly two dozen bags of trash while offering an update on the anticipated opening of a new store in Fernandina Beach.

Employees from stores in Yulee, Wildlight, Brunswick and Kingsland spent about two hours clearing debris from the beach, dunes, pavilion areas and portions of South Fletcher Avenue. The cleanup was conducted in partnership with Keep Nassau Beautiful.

Volunteers emphasized sustainability during the effort, using recycled feed bags instead of plastic trash bags. The bags were emptied into dumpsters and reused throughout the cleanup to minimize additional waste. Items collected included plastic bottles, cans, discarded beach toys and even tires.

Publix, founded in 1930 by George W. Jenkins in Winter Haven, has grown into the largest employee-owned supermarket chain in the United States, operating across eight southeastern states. The company is widely recognized for employee benefits such as stock ownership, health insurance and tuition reimbursement, as well as its community involvement.

Earth Day, first organized in 1970 by U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson and environmental advocate Denis Hayes, now includes participation from more than 180 countries. The movement gained momentum amid rising environmental awareness in the 1960s, influenced by publications such as Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" and events like the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill.

In addition, scientists became aware of the consequences of heavy pesticide use, such as DDT, in the early 1960s. DDT entering the food chain caused bird species like eagles and pelicans to produce eggshells so weak that their young could not develop. Their numbers plummeted.

This knowledge led to federal environmental protections, including the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act, which significantly improved air and water quality in the United States.

Publix is continuing this environmental stewardship by celebrating Earth Day with a week of community-based projects.

Murphy stated, “The new Publix store on Sadler Road is projected to open in early July, though construction timelines could shift. If delays occur, the opening is expected later in the summer.”

The store is expected to feature an updated format similar to the Silverleaf location in St. Augustine, including expanded food and beverage offerings, such as a smoothie and acai bar, craft beer, and wine.
