Operation Cold Summer results in 53 drug-related arrests

MEDIA RELEASE

Submitted by Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper

August 30, 2019

Over the past several months’ narcotics detectives with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and Fernandina Beach Police Department, with assistance from the 4^th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office and North Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Organization, conducted numerous undercover drug operations throughout Nassau County and Fernandina Beach.  Based on these operations 53 individuals have been arrested.

“The people who were involved in this operation sell poison to our citizens and are all repeat offenders,” said Sheriff Bill Leeper.  “If we successfully remove the drug dealers and repeat offenders from our community crime ultimately goes down.”

A total of 53 people were arrested for various drug-related charges during Operation Cold Summer.  These 53 individuals have a collective total of 599 previous arrests between them.  Items seized were 2,078 grams (over 4 pounds) of Ice Methamphetamine, 11 grams of heroin mixed with fentanyl, 14 grams of crack cocaine, 1,694 grams (over 3.75 pounds) of marijuana, 6 guns, 1 vehicle, and $8,688 in U.S. currency.

“Law enforcement and fire/rescue has responded to numerous overdose medical calls so far in 2019, with seven of those being fatal.  A total of sixteen people died of drug overdoses last year,” said Leeper.  “People who buy these illegal drugs are playing Russian roulette with their lives.”

For those who are addicted to these dangerous drugs, please seek out the help you need to live a clean and sober life.

“My hope is that this joint operation sends a very clear message to those involved in the sale of harmful, illegal substances. The Fernandina Beach Police Department is committed to working in partnership with the Sheriff’s Office to rid our community of its worst offenders, said Chief Jim Hurley.”

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and Fernandina Beach Police Department are continually seeking the community’s help in reducing illegal drug activity and asks anyone who knows someone dealing illegal drugs to please let them know.
