City permit forms opposite the Community Development Department service counter at City HallDuring May 2018, the city surveyed 424 permits, an increase of 49 from May 2017. The number of permits for new residential construction almost doubled over May 2017: 32 vs. 17. Much of the new construction permitted was for the Harbor View townhouse development on the site of the former Fernandina Lumber Yard as well as Shell Cove off Citrona Drive. Permit fees collected by the city in May were $566,674, a dramatic increase over the $213,316 collected in May 2017. The following activities accounted for the most permits issued by category: Mechanical (83), Roofing/re-roofing (69), and Tree removal, excavation and fill (49).
Building activity is up for 2018 (1,867) over the number of permits issued for the first 5 months of 2017 (1,665).
