National Braille Press (NBP) announced its 5th Braille Across America Challenge, where Kristin Robar of Yulee, Florida, is among the 70 participants from 21 states who are raising funds and spreading awareness about braille literacy. The challenge began on March 17, NBP’s 98th birthday, and ends on April 21, Marathon Monday in Boston — but fundraising efforts will continue until May 31. Participants in the challenge commit to running, walking or bicycling the distance of a marathon, 26.2 miles, in 36 days. Participants in Braille Across America come from across the U.S. including Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Kansas, Kentucky, Idaho, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Wyoming and Oregon.
“We are excited to welcome new and past participants to join our annual Braille Across America Challenge! The funds raised through this challenge will help promote our braille literacy programs that assist blind and visually impaired children and adults,” said Brian Mac Donald, President and CEO of National Braille Press.
Kristin Robar of Yulee, FL, said, “My fourth of five kids, Daxx, is blind due to Juvenile Batten Disease, a rare, terminal neurological disease. This is my third year with Braille Across America.”
Throughout the last few years, producing braille has been a very expensive process, as the cost of paper has gone up by 20%. Each participant must raise a minimum of $500, which will help produce 20 books, or each team must raise $2,600, which will help produce 104 books.
Every Braille Across America team member has a personalized fundraising page, fundraising guidance from NBP’s team, and easy mileage tracking. There are also training tips to prepare for the challenge, a sample schedule for challenge completion, team member Facebook groups, team Spotify playlists, and the chance to win additional individual and team awards and prizes from NBP.
