Nassau Habitat for Humanity has proudly received the Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing by the Northeast Florida Regional Council, after being nominated by Fernandina Beach Vice Mayor Len Kreger. We are truly honored to be recognized by the regional Council as a pioneer in affordable housing.
Our organization was formed Twenty-Five years ago to address the problem of poor living conditions due to financial stress in Nassau County. Since then we have completed Forty-Three homes and are in the middle of our Forty-Fourth, thanks to our volunteers.
Homeowners are selected by income and need. They also must not be eligible for a bank mortgage (as we are able to provide no-interest mortgages entirely from donations by local businesses, churches, individuals, and foundations). They will then put in 300 hours of work on their new home as part of their down payment, the other portion being a traditional payment ranging from $460 to $650. These homes are brand new, insured, and up to all safety codes. And as of this year we can happily say that Nine of our homeowners have paid off their homes.
