Nassau County Schools Receive “Healthy Schools Designation”

The Nassau County School Board Superintendent, Dr. Kathy Burns, announced that all schools in Nassau County, with the exception of Wildlight Elementary, have earned HealthierUS School Challenge designations in September. The application for this award was submitted prior to Wildlight’s opening.

Dr. Burns stated “We appreciate the opportunity to work collaboratively to provide a healthy environment for students.”

The HealthierUS School Challenge, a joint effort with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the United States Department of Agriculture, is a voluntary certification initiative that recognizes and rewards schools that promote nutrition education, physical activity and healthy school environments.

Schools can apply for four different levels of designation that last for four years: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Gold Award of Distinction. Awarded schools will receive up to $2,000 to enhance the school food service program. The following schools were recently awarded HUSSC designation:

• Bryceville Elementary School (Silver)
• Callahan Elementary School  (Silver)
• Callahan Intermediate School  (Silver)
• Callahan Middle School (Bronze)
• Emma Love Hardee Elementary School  (Silver)
• Fernandina Beach High School (Bronze)
• Fernandina Beach Middle School (Bronze)
• Hilliard Elementary School  (Silver)
• Hilliard Middle-Senior High School (Bronze)
• Southside Elementary School  (Silver)
• West Nassau High School (Bronze)
• Yulee Elementary School  (Silver)
• Yulee High School (Bronze)
• Yulee Middle School (Bronze)
• Yulee Primary School (Silver)
