Nassau County's "Positivity Rate" (percent of positive test results) increased to over 6% last week. We have 77 residents newly diagnosed with CoViD-19 and one new CoViD-related death.
The novel Coronavirus pandemic is still very active around the world. The novel SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant is the most contagious identified yet. It is much more transmissible and can trigger more serious illnesses in more people than other variants have. Scientists now know that SARS-CoV-2 virus particles can remain in the air much longer than previously suspected.
Do not stop using basic infection control measures every day.
- If you don't live with the person, stay at least six feet away from them.
- Wear a mask in crowded public places. We now know that the virus can be aerosolized and remains in the air longer than we thought.
- Wash your hands often! Stop shaking hands. Keep the things you touch cleaned and disinfected.
- If you feel sick, stay isolated at home until you know you are well and won't infect others; and get tested!
- If you were close to someone who was sick, quarantine for a full 14 days, monitoring yourself for signs/symptoms; and get tested!
- Get Vaccinated as soon as possible!
The dangerous SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant is dominating Europe and spreading so quickly in the United States that it's likely to become the predominant strain here within weeks.
It accounts for more than 242,000 new infections in the US in the last six months.
While the vaccines authorized for use in the US appear to provide protection against all known variants, the rapid spread of the dangerous Delta variant is raising concern because of the large number of people who remain unvaccinated.
In areas where vaccination rates are low, hospitals are already overwhelmed with new CoViD-19 patients (which means no room for accident, stroke, or heart attack victims.)
Vaccinated healthcare workers realize the Delta variant can cause "break-through" infection and have been quoted saying, "It is hard to know that you're risking your well-being for someone that chose not to vaccinate; that puts you, your family, and them at risk."
