There’s a new contender in the Wildlight caffeine scene. Mocama may have planted its roots first, but Foxtail Coffee has rolled into town with some serious steam, and faster than you’d expect. It’s not local-local, but it’s not a giant chain either.
This one comes with a twist: it’s not just a coffee shop. There’s a full-blown ice cream counter built right into the space. So now you’ve got your lattes, your flaky pastries, and a cold treat. It’s got the bones of a third-wave shop but the sheen of something bigger. Where Mocama leans into that earthy, small-batch, local artisan vibe, Foxtail feels a little more polished. Still warm, still welcoming, just dressed in sharper tailoring.
My first visit was rough. To be fair, they were on day two of opening. I placed a mobile order. Easy. But when I showed up? Nowhere in the system. Apparently, it happened to someone else too. A growing pain, sure, but frustrating all the same. To their credit, they handled it well. They comped me a drink, no fuss. And what a drink it was. A coconut mocha cold brew that slapped my taste buds in the best way. Sweet, rich, smooth.
So I gave them a few days and came back.
This time, I ordered in person. I walked in and started ordering. I asked one of the baristas to give me her favorite latte. I snagged the cookie I missed last time, tried a couple of new pastries and their breakfast options. I skipped the ice cream because, honestly, I wasn’t in the mood for more sugar.
The barista’s favorite? A butterscotch latte with half and half. It was lovely. Not overly sweet, but balanced and smooth — like someone threw a Werther's in a blender with espresso and made that work. Ten out of ten for that call.
Next up was the chocolate croissant. This is one of those “hard to mess up” items. It’s chocolate. It’s pastry. It’s either good or you messed up really bad. And this was good. Flaky, soft, buttery. Nothing extraordinary, but delicious.
Next were the egg bites. They were fine. Fluffy, mildly cheesy, entirely inoffensive. If you’ve ever had Starbucks’ version, you know the vibe. Egg molds with a side of “I should be eating better.” I’d order them again but wouldn’t write home about it.
But the real sleeper hit? Their breakfast sandwich. Two egg patties acting as the bread. These were cheesy, potato-studded little discs, hugging a sausage patty. The whole thing felt like someone Frankensteined a breakfast burrito into a low-carb slider, and it worked. Like weirdly well. The egg patties were the star. Crispy on the edges, cheesy and comforting. This was the kind of thing you don’t expect to love but end up thinking about a week later. I’d go back for this alone.
Then came dessert round two.
I finally tried the Foxtail cookie. Just a sugar cookie, dressed up and cute as hell. It’s aesthetic. And the double chocolate muffin was exactly what it says on the label. A whole lot of chocolate that paired beautifully with the butterscotch latte.
And that sums up Foxtail: reliable, classic, good.
It’s not trying to reinvent anything, but it’s giving you another option. If Mocama is your earthy neighborhood poet, Foxtail is the friend who’s clean-cut, confident, and always shows up with great hair. Some folks will prefer the intimate local feel of Mocama, and that’s fair. But if you’re craving something a little more modern, a little more versatile — with the added bonus of ice cream — you’re going to find yourself at Foxtail more often than you’d think.
