Permit portal is now live

Fernandina Beach paid parking signs go up

Posted
About a dozen 'pay to park' signs were installed on Centre Street in historic downtown Fernandina Beach last Friday as the city prepares to launch the program in two weeks.

The city's registration portal for Fernandina Beach residents to obtain fee exemption permits, as well as county residents who want to obtain reduced fee permits went live. Each city household may obtain up to two free permits.

Residents who live within the paid parking zone may register up to two vehicles per household and park free around the clock within the area. Non-city residents will be able to purchase annual vehicle permits for $124.

Permit holders will receive daily free parking allowances of up to four hours for on-street spaces and up to eight hours in surface parking lots. After the free period, parking will cost $2 per hour.

Drivers without permits may park for $2 per hour, with the first 20 minutes free each day to accommodate short visits. Vehicles displaying a valid disabled placard will be allowed to park at no charge without a permit.

The paid parking zone includes on-street spaces downtown from Ash Street to Alachua Street and from Front Street east to Eighth Street. Several designated surface parking lots throughout the downtown area are also included.

The city’s parking services contractor, One Parking, will maintain a local office at the Fernandina Beach Police Department, 1525 Lime St., where residents and visitors can receive assistance with permits and program questions.

The city posted this notice on Sunday: The customer portal to register for your downtown parking permit online is now live. As a reminder, city residents are eligible for a free annual parking permit (two per household) with registration. Additional permits are available for $24/year for city residents. I signed up for my permits online yesterday. It involved uploading a picture of my driver's license and and a picture of the registration for both cars I wanted to register. My guess is that for the people who don't want to do that online and want to do it in person, make sure to have your car registration(s) with you (along with your driver's license) when you go.

I used to love to go for a stroll on Centre Street to just enjoy the beauty of the architecture. Stop in the shops. Buy some local merchandise. Enjoy some local cuisine. Not going to bother with it anymore. The Fernandina of my childhood has been erased, destroyed by the greedy people who have moved here and decided that MORE is “needed”. The actual local people of this area have been gentrified OUT. They have turned our area into some fancy “resort” area that those of us who are true locals NEVER asked for. We are BLUE COLLAR, not champagne and caviar. We are simple people who don’t need much for happiness. We prefer majestic live oaks and natural open spaces to fancy restaurants and curated parks. All of this has been foisted upon us by people who have migrated here from other places and turned our home into something like where they came from. If they liked it so much there, then why don’t they just move back instead of messing up our quiet way of life? Now it has been forever changed and ruined. I’m heartbroken.

I think anyone with a Fernandina Beach DL should get free parking. Not just city limit. I spend a lot of time downtown, my son has a memorial bench in front of the Cinnamon Bear on Center Street. Yet, here I am having to pay for parking to sit on his bench and drink a cup of coffee. I'm seriously disappointed.
