Fernandina Beach Business and Building Starts: September 2013

The Community Development Department, which handles both planning and building, along with staffing city advisory committees, is doing its best to keep up with growing workloads during times of staffing cutbacks and increasing activity. The workload, as measured by building permits, is up 14% for the first 9 months of 2013 (2279 permits) over the corresponding period last year (2003 permits). During this period the city permitted 60 new buildings as opposed to 42 last year. Permit fees have also risen with the city collecting $1.2M in fees to date this year compared to $982K for the first 9 months of 2012.
Fernandina Beach Building Official Robert SasserThe City Building Department issued 236 building permits in September. By activity, the greatest number of permits were issued for mechanical work, followed by electrical and general residential building permits. Eleven permits for new buildings were issued.
Building Official Robert Sasser has noted an uptick in unpermitted work. His staff is working to stay on top of this matter, including dealing with the Florida Department of Worker Compensation.
