Dr. Maggie Deloris McCollough Carey departed this life at Methodist Hospital-Northlake, in Gary, Indiana, Monday, November 24, 2025.
Maggie was born November 3, 1941 in Fernandina Beach, Florida and was one of four children of the late Janie Lang McCollough and Wendell Herbert (W.H.) McCollough.
Maggie grew up in Fernandina Beach, Florida and was educated in the public school system of Nassau County, Florida. She was a graduate of the Peck High School class of 1959.
In 1962, she was united in marriage to the late Dr. Arthur Carey of Miami, Florida. To this union three sons were born – Wendell, Antonio, and Christopher. For most of her life, she lived in Gary, Indiana with her family until her demise.
Her educational career spanned over three decades as a retired teacher, principal, school administrator, and concluded her 34-year career as superintendent of schools in the Gary, Indiana school system. She was also the business owner of Quick Care 10 Minute Oil Change and Lube Center.
Dr. Carey received her doctorate degree in 1978 from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana, where she also received her master’s degree in education in 1969. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education in 1966 from Langston University in Oklahoma. She attended Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida before transferring to Langston University.
She was preceded in death by her younger sister Mary Louise McCollough, son Antonio Carey, her loving husband the late Dr. Arthur Carey, and her devoted parents.
She leaves to mourn her passing: two sons – Wendell and Christopher Carey; one step-daughter – Sharon (Cornel) Jacks; sisters – Annette McCollough Myers of Fernandina Beach, Florida and Dr. Barbara McCollough Carey-Shuler of Delray Beach, Florida; grandchildren – Arthur W.Y. Carey, Alainna Carey, Corey Carey, Sadoni Carey, Cambria Carey, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
Celebration of life services were held on December 17 at Shuler’s Memorial Chapel funeral home in West Palm Beach, Florida with interment following at Dade Memorial Park Cemetery in Miami, Florida.
The family expresses their heartfelt appreciation for all acts of love, kindness, and condolences in their bereavement.
