The elected were include: Chairman, Tammi Bach (City of Fernandina Beach), Vice Chair, Brett Steger (Davis, Broussard, Martin, Bernard & Steger Attorneys at Law PLLC), Treasurer, Dawn A. Lunt (Dawn A. Lunt Accounting) and Secretary, Jorge Puentes (Florida Public Utilities).
“I realize how important it is for young people to succeed in life and that begins with education. Middle school is an extremely vulnerable time with the pressures of peers and the outside world. Without positive guidance often their journey in life can become derailed. CIS provides an extra layer of support to surround our most vulnerable students with the tools they need to succeed, said Dawn Lunt, Board Treasurer.”
Current board members include” Carrie Budds (iMortgage), Todd Carr (First Baptist Church of Callahan), Gail Cook (Family Support Services), Dr. John Mazzella (Principal, Fernandina Beach Middle School)], Dr. John Ruis (Superintendent – Nassau County School Board), Michelle Valle (Omni Amelia Island Plantation) and Carolyn Whitecloud (Walmart).
The mission of Communities In Schools of Nassau County is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. The vision is that all students in Nassau County will graduate from high school on time with technical or college readiness and be prepared to achieve in life as life-long learners and contributors.
Over 3,000 Nassau County secondary students have access to walk-in, classroom and referral services each year through CIS. Approximately 500 youth are referred each year to CIS to receive more intensive case management, before and after school individual and small group tutoring, summer remediation, individual coaching, mentoring, and family support. Food, clothing, toiletries and school supplies are also provided as needed.
