Critics attack post

City publishes paid parking Facebook video

Posted

The city of Fernandina Beach posted a paid parking video Monday on its Facebook page to counter what it said were inaccurate rumors about the proposal.

"The City Commission directed the City Manager to put out a Request for Proposal to explore how some paid parking in premium spaces might work and what revenue it could generate. I asked the City Manager to share some facts ahead of the Town Hall, to help facilitate a more constructive conversation with residents. I think staff did a great job with the video and clarified common concerns that we've heard," said City Commissioner Joyce Tuten.

Opponents have mounted a petition drive with almost 4,000 signatures against paid parking and have been vocal on social media.

Six hours after the city posted its video, 90 percent of the 103 comments were against charging people to park in prime downtown parking spaces.

Supporters say the city needs the revenue it would generate for improvements and upkeep of the historic downtown. Initial comments are negative and attack the city as promoting paid parking in advance of any city commission vote on the matter.

The Observer has asked city commissioners to comment on the video. Only Tuten has responded.
