Beryl's Arrival Closes Fort Clinch Campground

Hundreds of  Fort Clinch campers were asked to leave as a result of tropical storm Beryl’s anticipated arrival. The closing of the campgrounds scheduled for Sunday, May 27,  at 1:00 p.m., came as a disappointment  to campers planning to enjoy an extended Memorial Day weekend. The move by park officials is a safety precaution in anticipation of tropical storm winds that are expected to reach 35-45 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.

The beach campground borders the Amelia River and the Atlantic Ocean. Seas are expected to reach 7 - 10 feet, increasing to 12 feet by the afternoon.   Fort Clinch's Amelia River Campground is within a dense tree canopy.

Although campgrounds are closed, gates are  open for day visitors unless park officials see further deterioration in weather conditions. Fort Clinch State Park is one of the most popular state parks in Florida.
