Affecting people of all races and ethnicities, cardiovascular disease is the single leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, responsible for one in four deaths in the United States each year. During American Heart Month, we remember those we have lost to this devastating disease, promote healthy lifestyles that mitigate its impacts, and pledge to continue our fight against it.
Though usually preventable, heart disease can manifest itself in sudden and unforeseen ways. Every person can take steps to reduce the risk factors associated with heart disease by encouraging healthy eating, physical activity, and by discouraging the use of tobacco.
Thanks to the medical and dental services available at Barnabas Center, financial hardship is no longer a reason to be without quality healthcare. One of Nassau County residents recently lost his health insurance right after having a 3-vessel heart bypass surgery. He was out of medication, and his blood sugar level was out of control. The Barnabas medical team diagnosed him with heart failure and severe vascular disease and treated his diabetes. Through the medical therapy provided by Barnabas, his heart function returned to normal and his overall health improved significantly.
Nassau county residents without medical insurance and whose income level meets the eligibility guidelines may be seen for medical care by contacting (904) 261-7000 to request an appointment. Barnabas Health Services is located at 1303 Jasmine Street in Fernandina Beach. With the recent opening of the Barnabas satellite office in Callahan, health services are now also being offered in west Nassau County.
Barnabas is Nassau County’s only comprehensive service center to help our neighbors in crisis, so they can become healthy, productive citizens. Through our partnerships, we reach even more people and maximize resources. We address critical issues facing our community, such as hunger, affordable health care, and prevention of homelessness.
Our mission is to provide help and hope to individuals and families in need throughout Nassau County to improve their stability, health and well-being. Our vision is every individual has an opportunity to lead a healthy and productive life, thereby strengthening our entire community.
