As a resident and reader, I’m deeply troubled by the News-Leader’s decision to terminate reporter Julia Roberts following her effort to uphold basic journalistic integrity and transparency regarding coverage of the local Pride event.
The Pride parade drew over 3,000 people — families, youth, seniors, veterans, and allies — and deserved coverage just as any other major civic event would. The choice to censor that coverage is not just an editorial decision; it’s a deliberate erasure of a vibrant and valuable part of our community.
When a journalist like Julia Roberts — respected, experienced, and committed — chooses truth over silence, she is doing exactly what local journalism is supposed to do: serve the public’s right to know. Punishing that choice not only undermines trust in the paper — it sends a chilling message about whose voices are welcome and whose are expendable.
I urge the News-Leader’s current leadership to reflect on the values that once defined this publication: fairness, transparency, and a commitment to the full community it claims to serve. True journalism doesn’t bend to fear or bias. It tells the truth, even when that truth is uncomfortable to power.
Julia Roberts deserves our respect, not retaliation. And our LGBTQ+ neighbors deserve visibility, not silence.
Sincerely,
Michael Kersten
