On Friday, May 23, Sherald G. Wilson Sr. president of the American Beach Properties Association appeared before the Nassau County Board of Commissioners to request the commission consider eliminating night time (dusk to dawn) beach driving on American Beach.  Wilson cited "nuisance and safety issues" and sea turtle nesting concerns.

Sandpiper Beach 020 CropWilson said the problem is not with beach goers who drive on the beach during the day. It is "the second group of people who come later in the night" who are disturbing the community. According to Wilson, he has received many complaints. The complaints include drag racing, cars stuck in the sand, the roar of diesel engines, cars driving east to west shining lights into bedroom windows, and late night knocks on homeowner's  doors requesting help.

Board Chairman Barry Holloway responded to Wilson's request saying  County Attorney David Hallman will review current ordinances, and then meet with individual commissioners to see if "there is anything we can do."
