AMELIA ISLAND — Construction is continuing on the roundabout at Amelia Island Parkway and Buccaneer Trail as crews complete drainage, lighting and shared-use path improvements.
According to a Nassau County project update, crews last week began installing underground conduit for new streetlights. They also continued grading areas where paved drainage ditches will be installed.
During the next two weeks, work is expected to include additional streetlight conduit installation, ditch excavation and paving, and paving the remaining sections of the shared-use path.
The final layer of roadway asphalt, known as the friction course, will not be installed until the concrete light poles arrive and are placed.
County officials said delaying the final paving will protect the finished roadway from possible damage caused by the equipment needed to install the poles. The sequencing is also expected to provide a longer-lasting road surface.
The county thanked motorists and nearby residents for their patience as work continues on what officials described as an important safety improvement.
