Tell Me a Story: My Life with Pat Conroy
Thursday, November 14, 2019
The Book Loft Bookstore
214 Centre St., Fernandina Beach
Cassandra King was a debut novelist when she met Pat Conroy. Their friendship bloomed into a long-distance relationship, and ultimately a marriage that would last 18 years, until the beloved literary icon’s death from pancreatic cancer in 2016.
In this poignant, intimate memoir, the woman he called King Ray looks back at her love affair with a natural-born storyteller whose lust for life was fueled by a passion for literature, food, and the Carolina Lowcountry that was his home. She reveals how she came to understand the man beneath the legend—her husband, the original Prince of Tides.
Reservations are required. Refreshments served. Your $20 donation supports the AIBF Authors in Schools Literary Program that provides books to every student in Nassau County. TICKETS ON SALE SEPTEMBER 23
Short Story Writing Contest
The Amelia Island Book Festival’s Short Story Writing Contest is an important way we connect students, authors and books for life-long learning. This year’s contest will launch in September for middle and high school students, with the theme of ‘Once Upon a Time.’
As in prior years, each short story must be between 500-1,000 words, and must be a new, original work. The submission deadline for all entries is Friday, December 15, 2019, no later than 5:00 p.m. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Judges will be local area literary experts and board members/leaders with the Amelia Island Book Festival. First and second-place winners receive cash prizes. Additional prizes are offered for creativity and style, and there are special prizes earmarked for winners from Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County.
Winning entrants also will meet a New York Times best-selling author during the Authors Expo and will have an opportunity for their work to be published. Prizes will be announced/awarded during the Authors Expo, Saturday, February 15, 2020, in the Fernandina Beach Middle School Auditorium.
