The Mocama Beer Company has been bustling with energy and growth since setting up shop in Fernandina Beach in 2020. Since then, the company has expanded its brand with a daytime venture, Mocama Coffee, and more recently, a second taproom in Wildlight. Mocama Coffee, in particular, has upped its game by unveiling a new breakfast menu.
I paid a visit to the original Mocama Coffee location on the island to experience this menu for myself. Located in a repurposed vintage car dealership turned brewery, the space itself is unique, blending the industrial charm of its past with the vibrant atmosphere of a modern taproom. With a warm coffee in hand, I settled in and took in the ambience, while waiting for my food.
First, let’s talk about the coffee, which is always a delight at Mocama. Their seasonal menus never disappoint, and during my visit, I was drawn to their autumn menu. I opted for the pecan latte, which was deliciously balanced with a pecan flavor complemented by caramelized sugar undertones. It’s the kind of drink that stays with you.
Soon, the food arrived, and it was time to dive into the new breakfast options. I started with the avocado bagel ($8.50), and was pleasantly surprised. Each bite was a medley of earthy avocado and crisp sprouts, spiced up by a gentle heat from the red pepper flakes. The cream cheese added a smooth, tangy balance that rounded out the flavors beautifully. It’s a bagel that offers more than the usual, remixing the millennial classic.
Next, I tackled the breakfast sandwich ($9.50), which came on a plain bagel and was stacked with sausage, pepper jack cheese, and a fluffy egg. Mocama offers plenty of customization here, allowing you to switch out the bagel, choose your cheese, and even add extra toppings like cream cheese. The sandwich itself was hearty and satisfying — nothing groundbreaking, but a solid, well-executed breakfast sandwich.
The real standout of the morning, however, was the Mediterranean quiche ($5.00). This dish was packed with bold flavors from roasted sweet red peppers, feta cheese, and caramelized onions. Each forkful was creamy, savory, and surprisingly filling for such a small slice. The roasted sweetness and creamy feta created a delicious contrast that felt indulgent yet light, leaving me wishing I’d ordered a second piece.
To round out the meal, I sampled a couple of their pastries — a classic muffin and a cheese Danish — which were delicious and exactly what you would expect. But the unexpected star of the show was the peanut butter bagel ($3.50). Generously spread with creamy peanut butter and drizzled with honey, it had the perfect crunch from the toasted bagel. The sweetness of the honey combined with the richness of the peanut butter made this an incredibly satisfying, budget-friendly treat.
Mocama Coffee continues to impress, not just with its evolving menu but with its lively atmosphere and thoughtful approach to food and drink. Whether you’re popping in for a quick coffee or lingering over a leisurely breakfast, it’s a place that brings a bit of joy to your day, one latte or bagel at a time.
