Great white caught on American Beach

A Yulee surf fisherman bagged a great white shark Tuesday on the shores of Amelia Island and videoed releasing it back into the ocean.

Alberto Vanegas posted on Facebook that he reeled in "a fish of a lifetime" off the coast of Amelia Island, a 9-10 foot long great white shark.

An avid surf fisherman, Vanegas said it started as a "normal day" of fishing at his favorite spot on Amelia Island. Using blackfin tuna head as bait, Vanegas said he was casting about 400 feet out when the line on his reel started taking off.

"I am honored and blessed to have caught the first Great White shark that was caught from the beach on the east coast of Florida. Biologists, researchers, and locals are all stunned and amazed that this apex predator was caught here and from the beach," Vanegas wrote on Facebook. "Thank you for all of the love and support. I am so excited and will continue to honor land-based shark fishing and conservation of these magnificent animals."

Vanegas is the owner of Amelia Island Land Based Shark Charter at American Beach.

Vanegas said he started out fishing for bull sharks, but hooked the great white instead. He and his fellow fisherman released it after reeling it into shore.

Vanegas posted the catch on his Facebook page and received a lot of congratulations and positive feedback.
