Fire Damages Beach Walkover

New Year's Eve fireworks are likely the cause of a dune fire that heavily damaged beach walkover 5N and destroyed two trash containers nearby.

Fernandina Beach firefighters were called when flames engulfed the beach access along Ocean Avenue at North Second, causing significant damage.  Officials said fireworks celebrations were the likely cause of the blaze.

Beach access 6N was also impacted and closed to the public.

According to Fire Department officals, the fire was ignited by fireworks that had been deposited in trash containers. Two trash containers, valued at $5,000, were destroyed.

City officials closed the walkover and were starting the process of determining when repairs to the walkover would begin. City offices were closed for the holiday Wednesday. No damage estitmates for the repair of the walkovers had been determined.

There were no injuries cited and no reports as to who was responsible for the fireworks that ignited the blaze.
