City Dedicates Opening of New Fire Station

A blustery morning failed to take the shine off the dedication Saturday of Fernandina Beach's $5 million fire station next to the municipal airport, with about 100 people attending the ceremonies.

"To our firefighters, thank you for everything you guys do. Your courage,  your commitment to make us all safer and we're proud to stand behind each one of you guys with this project," said interim Fire Chief Fino Murallo.

Former and current city commissioners, along with county officials, mingled with about 100 others inside the station's massive garage.

"As you know, it's been a long time coming for this great asset for our city and beautiful new home to our dedicated firefighters," said Commissioner Joyce Tuten. "I want to thank all of our firefighters for their selfless dedication to our city.  Residents know that 24/7 they can call and the fire department will there. It's fundamental to human well-being to feel safe, and our firefighters provide us with that critical service."

The $5 million project was 21 months behind its scheduled opening due to supply and project management issues that spanned the tenure of three different city commissions and three mayors.

The new facility replaces the aged building off Sadler Road and Fletcher Avenue, which will be upgraded to house the city's Ocean Fire Rescue staff and equipment.
